Sophie O'Rourke finished in 17th place in the Girls U19 competition at the recent British Open in Birmingham. Having won her first round match against Eve Driver 3-0 (11/8; 10/12; 11/5; 11/7) she lost 3-0 to the number 2 seeded Satomi Watanabi of Japan (4/11; 3/11; 0/11) who went on to reach the Final, losing to top seed Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam 12/10 11/7 11/9.
That result put Sophie into the 17-24 play-offs where the very best she could do was to win her remaining 4 matches to finish top of that group of players. This she did in great style coming from 2 games down to win against Welsh girl Ciara Richards (8/11; 10/12; 11/4; 11/3; 11/5) and then going on to beat Japan's Hyoju Seo 3-0 (11/1; 11/7; 11/7). Next came Gabi Fritsche from Holland whom she beat 3-0 (11/4; 11/6; 11/9) and then in her last match she recovered from a shakey start to finish a highly competitive competition with another win 11-2 7-11 4-11 7-11 this time against Canada's Emma Jinks. Great stuff Sophie!
